WordPress vs a custom website: how to choose

The fork is not 'modern versus old.' It is whether you are buying a CMS ecosystem or commissioning an interface. METEK does not resell marketplace themes as custom work. If you need WordPress, that is a different kind of vendor. If you need pages and fields that match the business, that is the custom path.

What you are actually buying

WordPress gives you a large plugin market, a familiar editor, and a security and update burden that never really ends. A purchased furniture or hotel theme is still that product with new colors.

Custom means the layouts are designed for the offer, the code is yours at handoff, and a content panel exists only for the objects you named: collections, rooms, lead times. There is no plugin directory to paper over a missing object.

When WordPress is the honest choice

A blog-heavy publisher, a team already trained on Gutenberg, or a site whose main job is frequent posts can be a fit. So can a budget that cannot cover custom design and still needs something live.

Then hire someone who will own updates, backups, and the theme's limits. Do not pay custom prices for a theme install.

When custom is the honest choice

Quote-led manufacturing, a hotel with room-type URLs, a local service page set, a multilingual market with native copy: these jobs fight a generic theme. You spend the money either on plugins and workarounds or on the pages.

Custom still uses internal templates. The article layout can repeat. The difference is ownership, not the absence of pattern.

Questions that settle the quote

Who can edit after launch, which fields, who owns hosting, what happens to old URLs, who writes titles. Ask those of every vendor. The answers separate a website from a visual refresh.

If you are already comparing agencies, the choosing-an-agency article is the sibling checklist. The custom-versus-template article covers marketplace skins. This one is the CMS fork.
